You know you’re in for a rough romantic ride when one of your potential couple smoosh names is “Hate.” That’s what you get when you put Days of Our Lives‘ Holly and Tate together, and after all their missteps, it may be what they end up feeling for each other! We don’t think they’re there just yet, but after their breakup fight on Thursday, there’s definitely plenty of anger to go around.

Holly said it herself when she ended things with Tate. Relationships aren’t supposed to be constant drama. She’s not wrong. That’s the hallmark of an unhealthy relationship. At least, that’s how it works in the real world. In daytime television, it’s the hallmark of a healthy storyline! And a ton of lasting power. But it’s also frustrating and can turn a lot of folks off to budding relationships.

Days In his home, Tate talks to Holly who's looking upset and off to the side

As Ultimate_Fan wrote on the Soaps.com message boards, Tate “has just pushed her into Doug’s bed and I’m not mad about it. Tate wants Holly to just go along for the ride while he does whatever he wants to do with Sophia. How many times has he ditched Holly because of something not life threatening for Sophia. Good riddance.”

But Tate and Holly are done and, whether Sophia and Doug were willing to admit it to each other, those two are just waiting to snatch up their respective crushes. That works out just fine for Holly and Doug fans like Tera Patric who, on yesterday’s recap, admitted, “Tate is too much of a simp with Holly. Holly at least respects Doug. But we all know it’s headed towards some love quadrangle for the next several months…”

Honestly, yeah, that’s probably a pretty spot on prediction. Because for those who have been hoping that Holly and Doug III might turn out to be endgame as they’re kind of echoing Julie and Doug’s journey, well… We’ve got some bad news.

Ashley Puzemis spoke with Soap Opera Digest and admitted she “wasn’t sad about” about the breakup, “because [Leo and I] both know that we have this thing where Tate and Holly are the end game. We both know that they’re going to get back together eventually — at least we hope so.”

The one thing we can hope if Tate and Holly get back together is that next time, they’ll have grown and matured a bit more, and learned how to better be there for each other and work through their problems. Otherwise, they’ll just end up like Nicole and Eric.  Sure, they may have actually turned out to be endgame — but only after they left the show together after decades of crashing and burning every time they tried a relationship.

Either way, Puzemis is happy enough with the change, telling Digest that, “we were excited to venture off with these other characters and have these other storylines.”

And ultimately, nothing lasts forever — in daytime or in real life. So we never know when one of these other characters might spark a love affair that has us all asking: Holly and Tate who?
